MATHWORKS Math Contest

What is Mathworks? The Mathworks Math Contest (MMC) – a free contest: an opportunity for middle school students (6-8th grade students) to explore mathematics and be challenged by high-level problems.

Format: The contest is a 15-question test (2 hours) that is proctored by math teachers and coaches at their respective schools. For students whose schools are not sponsoring the test, they can take the contest at Momentum Learning. Once all the students have taken the test, the contest papers will be sent back to Texas State MathWorks to be graded. After all the grades are calculated, they will be released to the teachers and coaches.

The top 4 students (with some age requirements) are invited to represent the United States at the Primary Math World Competition (PMWC) – an all-expense paid trip to HongKong. In addition, all participants are invited to apply to the Mathworks residential Junior Summer Math Camp (JSMC).

Momentum Learning will be hosting this contest. If your school does not sponsor this contest, you can take it at Momentum Learning on November 1st. The contest is free of charge.

Test Date: November 1st, 2018 (Thursday)
Katy Momentum: 4:30pm – 6:40pm
Sugar Land Momentum: 5:00pm – 7:00pm

What is AMC8? The AMC 8 is a 25 multiple-choice question, 40 minute test for middle schoolers designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem solving skills. No problems require the use of a calculator, and their use has been banned since 2008.

The AMC 8 is scored based on the number of questions answered correctly only. There is no penalty for getting a question wrong, and each question has equal value. Thus, a student who answers 23 questions correctly and 2 questions incorrectly receives a score of 23. This is not a standardized test; i.e. no school has to take it, but some schools choose to, mainly to encourage growth in mathematics among their students. Full scorers on the AMC 8 (25/25) get recognition and their picture on the AMCs web site as a top scorer.
