Additional Class Information

Class Description: This is a ONE YEAR (two semesters) class. It is intended for students who are new to problem solving and math competitions. This class will help students learn concepts and techniques beyond the school curriculum. Students who wish to enroll in this class are expected to have completed elementary school math curriculum and students should also have some basic pre-algebra knowledge such as order of operation, basic operations with fractions, exponents and should be able to solve basic equations. CM 201 also helps students improve their scores on math contests such as AMC 8, MATHCOUNTS etc.

What will be covered: All 4 subjects (Pre-Algebra/Algebra, Geometry, Number Theory, and Combinatorics) will be covered in this one-year class. The difficulty level is up to medium AMC8.

Time Required: Students are expected to attend the weekly 2-hr lecture and the optional weekly 1-hr TA session where the teacher will go over each week’s homework problems and answer any questions students might have. Students are expected to spend around 2 hours on homework problems each week.

Qualifying Test: Required for students in 7th grade and below

Who should skip this course: Students who scored 15+ on AMC 8

Recommended Grades: Grades 8+

Max Class Size: 20

Note: After you add CM201 to your cart, you will be on the waiting list until it is approved by our staff (usually within one business day). If the student is in 7th Grade or below, the student will need to take the qualifying test first unless you have finished both CM200A and CM200B. After it is approved, you will receive an invoice. If it is not approved or if we need any additional information, we will contact you via email or phone.

FAQ’s:

My child is a 6th grader with no additional math training outside of school. Should we take CM201?

In this case, we would recommend your child take CM200 first. CM200 will help bridge the knowledge from elementary school math to middle school Pre-Algebra. Many important Pre-Algebra topics will be covered in CM200, such as Ratios and Rates, Percents, Prime Factorization, etc. Without a solid foundation, it will be difficult for students to adequately learn the concepts covered in CM201.

Is CM201 class the same as Middle School Pre-Algebra?

The focus of CM201A (fall) is on Pre-Algebra (at the contest level), Numbery Theory, and some Combinatorics. The focus of CM201B (spring) is on Geometry and Combinatorics. We go beyond the basic school curriculum. We use more difficult problems to help students understand concepts and teach them how to apply techniques.

Will other topics (other than Pre-Algebra) be covered in this class CM201?

Yes, in addition to Middle School Pre-Algebra, basic knowledge about Geometry, Combinatorics, and Number Theory will be covered as well.
